Wikimedia Deutschland – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e. V. is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany. With more than 100 employees and about 65.000 members, it is the oldest and largest of 37 independent chapters of the international Wikimedia movement. The best-known Wikimedia project, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is used by millions of people across the world every day and is continuously updated and improved by millions of users.

Wikimedia Deutschland furthers these ideals even beyond the free encyclopedia: It is our aim to establish and promote the creation, collection, and distribution of free knowledge in all parts of society. Our objective is to create a world in which the sum of all human knowledge is freely accessible for everyone. The main focus of our activities is the support of volunteers, the development of technology and software, and the cooperation with cultural and scientific institutions. Furthermore, we advocate on both the national and EU-level a legal framework which allows for free knowledge to become part of our everyday life.

In order to promote these aims, we are currently seeking a capable and motivated Head of Product Management to join our Software & Development Department in the heart of Berlin. Our product portfolio includes:

  • Wikidata, the platform for linked structured data
  • Feature development for MediaWiki, the platform that powers the different Wikipedia projects around the world
  • our Fundraising application and support for various software projects coming from other departments within Wikimedia Deutschland.

This role will report to the Director of Software Development & Engineering and be responsible for the Product, Program and Project Managers.

What we expect

As the Head of Product Management you have/are: 

  • Many years of product management or equivalent experience with demonstrated ability to discover opportunities, and then define and deliver products
  • You have defined and released products, experience with different methodologies, you have failed and learned from it
  • Proven ability to lead and grow Product Managers individually and as a team
  • Eye level communicator with a proactive attitude for solving problems
  • Are an attentive listener and able to see multiple perspectives
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices
  • Strong understanding of technology and ability to work well with engineers
  • The ability to assure a consistent, rapid and effective delivery of products
  • An inspirational product leader that is future oriented and always keeps the user in mind
  • Demonstrated a high level of analytical and quantitative skills and possess the ability to use information/data and various metrics to enable the Product Managers to make informed product decisions

What you will perform

As the Head of Product Management you are responsible for:

  • Guiding the team in creating a compelling product vision that aligns with overall organisational and strategic goals
  • Recruiting, training and growing our team of Product Managers
  • Managing the software product portfolio of Wikimedia Deutschland
  • Collaborating well with adjacent domains like design, engineering, community communication
  • Collaborating across teams and organisations
  • Defining and measuring the success of the products your team is responsible for
