Wikimedia Deutschland – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e. V. is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany. With about 120 employees and about 70.000 members, it is the oldest and largest of 38 independent chapters of the international Wikimedia movement. The most well-known Wikimedia project, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is used by millions of people across the world every day and is continuously updated and improved by millions of users.

Wikimedia Deutschland furthers these ideals even beyond the free encyclopedia: It is our aim to establish and promote the creation, collection, and distribution of free knowledge in all parts of society. Our objective is to create a world in which the sum of all human knowledge is freely accessible for everyone. The main focus of our activities is the support of volunteers, the development of technology and software, and the cooperation with cultural and scientific institutions. Furthermore, we advocate on both the national and EU-level a legal framework which allows for free knowledge to become part of our everyday life.

We are looking for a UX Designer (m/f/d) in part or fulltime to join our Software & Development Department at the heart of Berlin to support the future growth of our Wikidata Platform. You will be responsible for ensuring our design goes hand in hand with the underlying technology.

What you will perform

  • Consider design and development needs for an efficient design infrastructure
  • Design behaviour and style of UI components
  • Communication with engineers and engineering leads to create the components
  • Ensure a transition from the current user interface to a design system and style guide based interface

What we expect

  • Experience with design systems
  • Skills in defining interaction patterns which are clean, efficient, versatile and follow common standards
  • Experience with usability principles
  • Experience in working with design and prototyping tools (Figma or Sketch)
  • Understanding of Javascript, HTML, CSS, SVG, MVV frameworks (e.g. React, Vue)
  • Great communication and presentation skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with AB Testing
  • Knowledge of other programming languages
  • Experiences in working in an Open Source context
  • Experience in accessibility standards requirements
  • Experience working with project-/product management
