Wikimedia Deutschland – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e. V. is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany. With more than 100 employees and about 65.000 members, it is the oldest and largest of more than 40 independent chapters of the international Wikimedia movement. The best known Wikimedia project, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is used by millions of people across the world every day and is continuously updated and improved by millions of users.

Wikimedia Deutschland furthers these ideals even beyond the free encyclopedia: It is our aim to establish and promote the creation, collection, and distribution of free knowledge in all parts of society. Our objective is to create a world in which the sum of all human knowledge is freely accessible for everyone. The main focus of our activities is the support of volunteers, the development of technology and software, public education, and cooperation with cultural and scientific institutions. We grant scholarships to volunteers working for Wikimedia projects and we provide technical support. On both the national and EU-level, we are advocating a legal framework which allows for free knowledge to become part of our everyday life.

We are looking for a Head of Community Communication (m/f/d) to join our Software & Development Department in the heart of Berlin. You will be responsible for our team of Community Communication and Partnership Experts. This role will report to the Head of Software & Development Department.

The Community Communication managers are working with Wikidata and Wikipedia editors, people who add information on the projects, or reuse this information, most of the time as volunteers. They are self-organized and work and communicate mostly through online channels, although some of them also participate to meetups and events. What we call “communities” represents this diverse crowd of people who have in common the will of improving free knowledge on the Wikimedia projects

As the Head of Community Communication you have/are: 

  • Experienced in communicating with online communities of volunteers, understanding the dynamics and challenges connected to it
  • Created strategies for communicating software products and features to diverse audiences, engaging them in fruitful exchanges
  • Familiar with methodologies and techniques that create user engagement, online and offline, and know when to use which
  • Proven ability to lead and grow people individually and as a team
  • Eye level communicator with a proactive attitude for solving problems
  • An attentive listener and able to see multiple perspectives
  • Experienced in making the voice of users and communities heard within an organisation

As the Head of Community Communication you are responsible for:

  • Keeping the organizational goals and user needs in a healthy balance.
  • Representing the Community Communication team in meetings and decisions making processes.
  • Facilitating growth and learning for the Community Communication team 
  • Recruiting, training and growing our team of Community Communication and Partnership Experts.
  • Developing processes for distributing, sharing and communicating tasks in the team and between the Community Communication team and other teams like engineering and UX.
  • Advocating the voices of our users and communities.
  • Collaborating across teams and organisations.
