We are looking for an experienced Machine Learning Project Manager (m/f/d) to join our Software & Development Department. You will be the first machine learning team member in the Wikidata team. In this generalist role, you will be responsible for developing machine learning solutions and project management to support our product and strategy to enable data science applications.

As a Machine Learning Project Manager, you will be part of the Project Management team, working closely with our Head of Project Management and Portfolio Lead Product Manager for Wikidata. You will work with our product managers, designers, and engineers who build features, products, and services used by hundreds of millions of people around the world. As an experienced ML project manager, you enable us and our communities to achieve our vision: a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

For background information, take a look at the strategic direction developed for Wikidata and our vision of a Linked Open Data Web.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Spearhead the creation of a vector database containing embedded vectors from Wikidata’s data. This database will enable live updates and provide credible, cited information for LLMs, ML pipelines, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications.

  • Enhance Wikidata's capacity to enable the open-source ML community to build responsible AI applications using Wikidata's extensive knowledge base, focusing on ethical, inclusive, and diverse use cases.

  • Address the challenges of efficiently accessing Wikidata at large scales by the open-source ML community, ensuring that our data supports innovation and equitable access for developers.

  • Lead efforts to upgrade our vandalism detection systems, ensuring the highest data quality and safeguarding Wikidata against misinformation and disinformation.

  • Develop a project plan that reflects Wikimedia Deutschland's values, promoting diversity, equity, and sustainable open-source ML practices in all aspects of the project lifecycle.

What makes you right for this role:

  • Degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related field, with a solid grasp of AI/ML technologies, ethical considerations, and their applications in open knowledge platforms.

  • Technical project management experience, ideally in AI/ML initiatives, with a proven track record of leading innovative projects, involving large-scale datasets, within an open-source or community-driven environment.

  • Deep commitment to the principles of free knowledge, open access, and equitable participation, with the ability to navigate the complexities of community engagement and open-source development.

Your impact

  • Revolutionise how Wikidata's knowledge is accessed and utilised by ML and LLM applications, enhancing the credibility and reliability of information ecosystems globally.

  • Empower the open-source ML community with tools and resources to innovate responsibly, ensuring that underrepresented communities are adequately represented in digital knowledge spaces.

  • Strengthen Wikidata's role as a trusted source of open knowledge, ensuring its data remains free, accessible, and of the highest quality amidst evolving technological landscapes.

What sets you apart:

  • An ML project leader who is deeply aligned with Wikimedia's mission and values, passionate about advancing the frontiers of free knowledge through cutting-edge technology.

  • An inclusive collaborator who thrives in diverse environments, skilled in building consensus and fostering respectful relationships across a global community of contributors.

  • An innovative problem solver, proactive and adaptable, ready to navigate the challenges of integrating AI/ML technologies with the principles of open, accessible, and free knowledge.
