Wikimedia Deutschland – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e. V. is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany. With 140 employees and about 74.000 members, it is the oldest and largest of about 40 independent chapters of the international Wikimedia movement. The most well-known Wikimedia project, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is used by millions of people across the world every day and is continuously updated and improved by millions of users. 

Wikimedia Deutschland furthers these ideals even beyond the free encyclopedia: It is our aim to establish and promote the creation, collection, and distribution of free knowledge in all parts of society. Our objective is to create a world in which the sum of all human knowledge is freely accessible for everyone. The main focus of our activities is the support of volunteers, the development of technology and software, and the cooperation with cultural and scientific institutions. Furthermore, we advocate on both the national and EU-level a legal framework which allows for free knowledge to become part of our everyday life.

As a Technical Writer you will:

  • Create, maintain and update manuals, procedures, specifications and other documents related to Wikidata and Wikibase
  • Convert technical documentation and ideas into manuals and instructions that are understandable by laypersons
  • Review, revise, modify or edit documents prepared by other staff
  • Coordinate project plans for documentation creation and rollout to external partners
  • Provide direct support to the partnerships team in their communications with existing and potential partners. Assist them in supporting workshops
  • Provide writing, editing, UX and design support to other team
  • Assist in the collection of user feedback to update and improve content
  • Design and establish style guidelines and standards for texts to meet business needs
  • Evaluate and recommend revisions to existing standards and guidelines

As a Technical Writer you have:

  • Have proven experience working as a technical writer in software development
  • Have superb written and oral English communication skills
  • Be able to write in explanatory and procedural styles for audiences of greatly differing levels of technical understanding
  • Have a demonstrable portfolio of documentation for at least one software product
  • Be able to work with a very diverse group of people both internally and externally

Ideally you have:

  • Have experience working with open source software
  • Have some basic programming skills
  • Are willing to travel for events and workshops
  • Have worked with cultural or scientific institutions
  • Have experience with online communities and an understanding of their needs
  • Know what it means to participate in a volunteer project
