Wikimedia Deutschland – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e. V. is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany. With 150 employees and about 80.000 members, it is the oldest and largest of about 40 independent chapters of the international Wikimedia movement. The most well-known Wikimedia project, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is used by millions of people across the world every day and is continuously updated and improved by millions of users. 

Wikimedia Deutschland furthers these ideals even beyond the free encyclopedia: It is our aim to establish and promote the creation, collection, and distribution of free knowledge in all parts of society. Our objective is to create a world in which the sum of all human knowledge is freely accessible for everyone. The main focus of our activities is the support of volunteers, the development of technology and software, and the cooperation with cultural and scientific institutions. Furthermore, we advocate on both the national and EU-level a legal framework which allows for free knowledge to become part of our everyday life. 

We are looking for an Engineering Manager (m/f/d) (full time or part time min. 30  hours per week) to join our software development team in Berlin. You will be responsible for having your eye on the big picture that guides the development of our complex software products.

In this role you will:

  • Support and develop the team with clear expectations via practices such as 1:1s, goal setting, and constant feedback
  • Create  a high performing and positive work environment based on open communication, agile principles, accountability, and trust. Install a spirit of continuous improvement in the team’s code, architecture, and processes
  • Create growth opportunities for team members and address gaps via non-technical skills/ mentoring/technical skill and focus on helping people reach their full potential
  • Connect with other teams to unblock dependencies, provide visibility and transparency to team progress on product initiatives
  • Support the Product Manager and Tech Lead in project planning and continuous process improvement for an optimal flow of value
  • Build a team culture that is collaborative, inclusive, and respectful, but that also drives to deliver
  • Work closely with the team and the recruiting team to hire high potential engineers from diverse backgrounds
  • Work closely with the department team leads to ensure that the department achieves its goals

As Engineering Manager you have:

  • 3+ years of leadership experience in software development
  • 3+ years of experience working in an agile software development environment
  • 1+ years of experience managing a software engineering team
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Very good English and a good passive understanding of German (sufficient to listen and understand German speakers in meetings)
